Founded in 1992 by Guy Alba, the European Leukodystrophy Association (ELA) brings together families who unite to overcome these rare degenerative genetic diseases that affect the myelin (nerve sheath) of the nervous system (brain and spinal cord). They cause very severe disabilities and progressively lead to the loss of all mental and motor functions (sight, hearing, memory, locomotion).
Every week in France, 3 to 6 children are born with these terrible diseases. The Association has been sponsored for more than 20 years by Zinédine Zidane.
Its missions :
- To finance medical research
- To inform and accompany families on a daily basis - To raise public awareness
- To develop its action on an international level
